Update to SSL

Jan 3, 2015

Browshot, like many web applications, uses HTTPS to encrypt your web transaction and to guarantee the legitimacy of our website.

There are man ways to deploy HTTPS. Done wrong, many of the security benefits of the protocol are lost. We continually test our configuration against the latest SSL vulnerabilities reported to ensure a high level of security.

SSL Labs offers an extensive tests of any HTTPS servers. To ensure that we keep our A rating, we have updated all of our web servers on 12/12/2014 to tune our HTTPS settings.

You can check the results on SSL Labs. Note that we use more servers than what SSL Labs reports. The configuration is identical on all of our servers, so the tests should yield the exact same results.

We will continue to monitor our HTTPS settings to keep the highest level of security for our customers. We will upgrade our certificate to a SHA2 signature when we renew it in 2015.

Desktop browsers upgraded

Sep 16, 2014

We have upgraded all desktop browsers over the last 2 weeks. Along with the support of the latest CSS3 and HTML5 elements, this upgrade brings many improvements:

  • better handling of Flash content
  • handling invalid SSL certificates
  • screenshots of PDF documents
  • better full-screen screenshots
  • fix for several crashes

You can use any desktop size, from 1x1 to 2000x2000 by specifying screen_width and screen_height in the API call.

We will continue to upgrade our browsers regularly.

Next, we will upgrade the mobile browsers. Today, our customers use just a few of the many devices we offer. In order to offer the best mobile browsers, we will focus our resources on the devices actually used. Some browsers will only be available as private instances:

  • BlackBerry PlayBook Tablet
  • Blackberry Torch 9800
  • Android - Fennec

Internet Explorer available

Jun 29, 2014

Many of our users have asked us to add Internet Explorer to the list of instances available on Browshot. After many weeks of development and testing, our Internet Explorer instances are ready for public use.

First, Internet Explorer 11 is available for free. In a couple of weeks, we will add Internet Explorer 9 & 10 as premium instances.

Internet Explorer 11 - 2-week trial

Internet Explorer is available today for free as part of a 2-week trial. These two weeks will allow us to fix any problem with the instance before we make it available as a premium instance.

Internet Explorer 9, 10 & 11 - Premium browsers

After the 2-week trial, Internet Explorer 9, 10 & 11 will be available as Premium browsers (2 credits / screenshot).

All 3 instances are native Internet Explorer browsers running on Windows 7 with the latest Flash version.

Browshot and the Heartbleed bug

Apr 12, 2014

You are probably familiar with the Heartbleed bug by now. If not, there is a good read on it at http://heartbleed.com/.

We use the Linux CentOS 6.5 distribution on all our servers. It shipped with one of the vulnerable version of openSSL. Browshot has updated all of its 7 web servers to the latest openSSL version. We are not vulnerable to the Heartbleed bug anymore. If you want to check if a website is affected by this SSL vulnerability, try out http://filippo.io/Heartbleed/.
